My grandmother was a role model for me growing up because of her strength, resilience, and warmth. As she got older and began living with dementia, I saw how much the disease affected someone who had always been such a steady presence in my life. She was fortunate to have a team of physical and occupational therapists who helped her manage the cognitive and physical changes that came with aging. They kept her steady and engaged, and gave my mom, her primary caregiver, peace of mind knowing she was safe and supported.

I’ve also experienced the impact of therapy in my own life. Being active has always been important to me, but I’ve struggled with injuries and complications from hypermobility. My physical therapist taught me how to build strength and stability around my joints, which has helped me stay active and prevent future injuries. I was lucky to have a doctor who understood the value of physical therapy and insurance that covered my care, but I also spent time in those waiting rooms watching other patients turned away or denied treatment because of insurance issues.
